Waterfalls of Europe

Norway's Vinnufossen, at roughly 845–860 metres, is most often cited as Europe's tallest waterfall, and the World Waterfall Database also lists Switzerland's seasonal Mattenbachfälle at about 930 m. Of the falls in our index, Kjelfossen (755 m) and Mardalsfossen (705 m), both in Norway, are the tallest.

The best known are Gullfoss (Iceland), Seljalandsfoss (Iceland), Skógafoss (Iceland), Plitvice Lakes Waterfalls (Croatia), Rhine Falls (Switzerland) and Dettifoss (Iceland). Our index covers 307 waterfalls in Europe; every one has a page with activities, seasons and how to get there.

Across the waterfalls we cover, the most are at their best June. Nearly everything here is reachable by road or rail, often with a short walk. Snowmelt makes May to August the peak for most alpine and Nordic falls; winter brings ice and short days in the north, and some mountain roads close from autumn to spring.
