Waterfalls in Iceland
32 waterfalls, from Gullfoss to Írárfoss — at their best June to August.
Iceland's waterfalls are a direct record of its volcanic geology: glacial rivers crossing basalt lava fields and stepped rock shelves produce broad curtains as often as single high drops. Most of the country's best-known falls sit along the South Coast and Golden Circle, Gullfoss, Skogafoss, and Seljalandsfoss among them, within a few hours of Reykjavik. The Diamond Circle in the northeast holds Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall by average discharge, fed by glacial meltwater from Vatnajokull. Svartifoss, in the southeast, drops over basalt columns that inspired the design of Reykjavik's Hallgrimskirkja church. Hraunfossar, in the west, is not a single fall at all but a kilometre of spring water seeping out of a lava field into the Hvita river.
When to go
Flow is highest June-August, when snowmelt and long daylight coincide with the easiest road access; South Coast falls run year-round, but southeast and highland routes can close after autumn storms. Winter turns Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss into ice sculptures and adds a chance of aurora, though paths can be icy and some Ring Road sections close temporarily.
Getting around
A self-drive on the Ring Road (Route 1) reaches nearly all of the falls listed here, with the South Coast and Golden Circle manageable in a standard car; winter driving and the unpaved F-roads to the highlands need a 4x4 and local advice. Organised day tours from Reykjavik cover the Golden Circle and South Coast without a rental.
Entry requirements
Iceland is in the Schengen area; US, Canadian and UK visitors enter visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180. The EU's ETIAS pre-travel authorisation has been repeatedly delayed and was not in operation at the time of writing (September 2026), so check before you travel.
Entry rules checked September 2026. They change without much notice — confirm with the official government source before you travel.
