Four things decide a waterfall trip
Waterfalls are the most seasonal attraction in travel. The same place is a different trip in April and October — and the activities you came for may not run at all.
1. Water level is the whole trip
Flow can swing by an order of magnitude across a year. High water is loud, spectacular and often invisible — the spray hides the falls and soaks every viewpoint. Low water exposes the rock, opens the gorge, and makes the swimmable pools and technical rafting possible. Neither is objectively better. Decide which trip you want, then pick the month.
2. The activity window is narrower than the season
Devil's Pool at Victoria Falls opens for roughly five months a year. Rafting below the same falls stops entirely at peak flood. Ice climbing needs a hard freeze; canyoning needs the opposite. Check the activity's window before you book the flight, not after.
3. Access is not the same as difficulty
We rate access to the main viewpoint as easy, moderate or hard. Easy means a roadside viewpoint or a short walk. Hard can mean a multi-day approach, a charter flight, or a guide requirement — Angel Falls is a river trip, not a drive.
4. Great falls sit on borders
Victoria Falls, Iguazú, Niagara, Detian, Ban Gioc — some of the best are split between two countries with different views, fees, and visa rules. Work out which side you want before you book the bed, and budget for both park entries if you plan to cross.
