Waterfalls in Croatia
5 waterfalls, from Plitvice Lakes Waterfalls to Topoljski Buk — at their best May to June.
Croatia's falls are almost entirely defined by travertine, the porous limestone deposit that both dams rivers into terraced lakes and keeps building new barriers over time. Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a living, still-growing system of this kind, with a chain of lakes connected by dozens of named and unnamed cascades over travertine ledges. Krka National Park, further south in Dalmatia, works the same way on a smaller scale: Skradinski Buk, its best-known and most-visited named waterfall, spreads across a wide travertine terrace that was, until recently, open for swimming.
When to go
Flow and water level are highest in spring and early summer, roughly April-June, and again in autumn, September-October, after rain; the driest, warmest months of July-August draw the largest crowds despite somewhat reduced flow. Winter can bring ice to Plitvice's boardwalks and shorter opening hours.
Getting around
Both parks are reachable by bus or rental car, from Zagreb for Plitvice, or Split and Zadar for Krka. Plitvice has no road through the park itself, so visitors walk boardwalks and take an internal shuttle boat and bus; Krka's Skradinski Buk is reached via a similar boardwalk network from the park entrance.
Entry requirements
Croatia is in the Schengen area; US, Canadian and UK visitors enter visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180. The EU's ETIAS pre-travel authorisation has been repeatedly delayed and was not in operation at the time of writing (September 2026), so check before you travel.
Entry rules checked September 2026. They change without much notice — confirm with the official government source before you travel.
