Waterfalls in Slovenia
5 waterfalls, from Boka Waterfall to Javornik Falls — at their best May to June and October.
Slovenia's waterfalls come off the limestone of the Julian Alps and Triglav National Park, and the two covered here sit on either side of the range. Boka, near Bovec in the Soca valley, is among the country's tallest: the stream emerges from a karst spring high in the cliff and falls about 106 metres in its upper drop, with a further 30-odd metres below, and its flow swings from around two cubic metres a second in dry spells to as much as 100 after heavy rain. Savica, above the western end of Lake Bohinj, drops 78 metres from a karst spring in a distinctive A-shaped fall and feeds the lake, making it a source of the Sava Bohinjka and, downstream, the Sava, Slovenia's longest river.
When to go
Flow is highest with snowmelt from April to June and again with the heavy autumn rains of October and November, when the Julian Alps are among the wettest parts of the Alpine chain. Summer is busiest and flows are lower. Savica's paid path is open year-round but closes temporarily in storms, high water, snow or ice, and the Vrsic Pass road to Bovec usually closes in winter.
Getting around
Ljubljana airport is about an hour's drive from Bohinj. Buses run year-round from Ljubljana to Lake Bohinj and Ukanc, with a summer-only bus to the Savica car park, and the Bohinj railway stops at Bohinjska Bistrica. Boka is a short walk from the main road between Bovec and Kobarid; reach it over the Vrsic Pass in summer or via Kobarid year-round.
Entry requirements
Slovenia is in the Schengen area; US, Canadian and UK visitors enter visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180. The EU's ETIAS pre-travel authorisation has been repeatedly delayed and was not in operation at the time of writing (September 2026), so check before you travel.
