Africa has the waterfall most people picture first — Victoria Falls, where the Zambezi drops as a single 1.7-kilometre curtain into a basalt slot — and some of the most dramatic that almost nobody visits. Tugela Falls pours off the Drakensberg's Amphitheatre in South Africa, Kalambo drops into a gorge on the Zambia–Tanzania border, and at Murchison Falls in Uganda the Nile forces its way through a rock gap only a few metres wide.

Seasons split by hemisphere. In southern Africa the big rivers peak after the summer rains, from around February to May, while East Africa has two rainy seasons a year. Many of these falls sit inside national parks, which makes a waterfall trip here easy to combine with a safari.

Tugela Falls in South Africa's Drakensberg, at about 948 metres over several tiers, is the tallest waterfall in Africa and is usually ranked second in the world after Angel Falls. Zimbabwe's Mutarazi Falls, at about 770 metres in two tiers, is usually named Africa's second highest.
