Blue Nile Falls. Known locally as Tis Abay, 'smoking water', the Blue Nile plunges over a horseshoe of basalt cliffs about 30 km downstream of Lake Tana. A stone bridge said to date from the 17th century crosses the gorge just below; hydropower diversion means the falls run full mainly from July to October.
