Ghana's waterfalls lie in the forested hills north-east of Accra, along and below the Akwapim-Togo range that runs up to the border with Togo. Wli, also called Agumatsa, in the Volta Region near Hohoe, is the country's highest: its upper fall drops around 80 metres inside the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary, where thousands of fruit bats roost on the cliffs and stream out at dusk. Most visitors take the largely flat walk of about 90 minutes to the lower fall; the upper fall is a steep, demanding half-day hike. Boti Falls, in the Eastern Region near Koforidua, is smaller at about 30 metres, a pair of streams known locally as the male and female falls, which merge into one in the rainy season.

When to go

Southern Ghana's main rains run from about April to July, with a second, lighter wet season around September and October; both falls are fullest from June to September, when Boti's twin streams can merge. The upper Wli trail gets slippery and can be unsafe after heavy rain. From December to February the dusty Harmattan wind cuts both flow and visibility, though trails are at their easiest.

Getting around

Most visitors fly into Accra's Kotoka airport. Boti is about 90 minutes' drive from Accra and around 30 minutes beyond Koforidua, so it works as a day trip by car or tour. Wli is roughly 280 kilometres from Accra; drive, or take a bus to Hohoe and a shared taxi or tro-tro on to Wli village, where guides are arranged at the sanctuary office.

Entry requirements

US, UK, Canadian and EU citizens need a visa before travelling to Ghana; an official e-visa portal (evisa.immigration.gov.gh) opened in May 2026, so check the official government site for current fees and processing times. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required on arrival. Visa on arrival has been discontinued.

Entry rules checked September 2026. They change without much notice — confirm with the official government source before you travel.
