Waterfalls in Canada
61 waterfalls, from Niagara Falls to Centennial Falls — at their best April to June.
Canada's falls split into two very different categories: enormous-volume Niagara Falls, where the Niagara River drops over an ancient limestone escarpment, and the glacier-fed falls of the Rockies and British Columbia, where meltwater from shrinking ice fields feeds thin, towering cascades. Takakkaw Falls and Della Falls rank among the country's tallest, both fed by receding glaciers, while Athabasca Falls and Johnston Canyon are Rockies staples reached on short trails from the Icefields Parkway and Banff. Montmorency Falls, outside Quebec City, stands taller than Niagara despite carrying far less water. At the remote end, Virginia Falls on the South Nahanni River in the Northwest Territories is reachable only by float plane.
When to go
Glacier-fed Rockies and BC falls run strongest in June-August as snowmelt peaks, then drop off noticeably by September. Niagara's flow is managed under a hydroelectric treaty and stays strong most of the year, though a portion is diverted at night and in winter. Montmorency is most dramatic in spring meltwater and freezes into a large ice cone by midwinter.
Getting around
Niagara, Montmorency, and the Rockies falls along the Icefields Parkway and in Banff and Jasper are reachable by rental car, and Niagara also by rail or bus from Toronto. Della Falls on Vancouver Island requires a boat across a lake plus a long hike. Virginia Falls needs a chartered float plane from Fort Simpson.
Entry requirements
US citizens need only a passport. UK and EU visitors flying to Canada need an eTA (CA$7) arranged online before travel; no eTA is needed when arriving by land, such as over the Rainbow Bridge at Niagara.
Entry rules checked September 2026. They change without much notice — confirm with the official government source before you travel.
