Waterfalls in India
77 waterfalls, from Jog Falls to Perunthenaruvi Falls — at their best August to November.
India's waterfalls cluster heavily along the Western Ghats, the mountain range that catches the full force of the southwest monsoon and feeds falls such as Dudhsagar on the Goa-Karnataka border, Jog Falls in Karnataka, and Athirappilly in Kerala. Kunchikal Falls, also in Karnataka, is often cited as India's tallest by total height across its tiered drops. In the northeast, Meghalaya's wet, karst plateau produces Nohkalikai Falls, the country's tallest single plunge, fed by a modest stream that can turn into a torrent within hours of monsoon rain. Chitrakoot Falls, in Chhattisgarh, spreads across a wide, low ledge on the Indravati River and is widely nicknamed the Niagara of India for its width rather than its height.
When to go
Nearly all of these falls depend on the southwest monsoon, running heaviest June-September and often reduced to a trickle by the following spring. Dudhsagar and Jog Falls are best seen July through October, just after the rains peak, when access roads have dried out but flow is still strong; several, including Jog, are noticeably diminished outside monsoon season.
Getting around
A scenic rail line runs directly past Dudhsagar, one of the few falls in this index reachable that way. Elsewhere, hired cars or local taxis from the nearest town are typical, and Meghalaya's falls are usually visited as part of a longer road trip around Cherrapunji and Shillong given the region's limited rail access.
Entry requirements
US, UK, Canadian, and EU citizens all need a visa for India; most apply for the e-Visa online in advance, commonly valid for up to a year with multiple entries.
Entry rules checked September 2026. They change without much notice — confirm with the official government source before you travel.
