Pagsanjan Falls
A tall, three-tiered fall at the head of a sheer jungle gorge in Laguna, about 100 km from Manila, reached by two boatmen poling a canoe upstream over 14 rapids, or by steel stairs down from Cavinti. Then a bamboo raft under the curtain.

Pagsanjan Falls is the end point of a gorge rather than a waterfall you simply walk up to. The Bumbungan River, also called the Pagsanjan River, has cut a deep, narrow canyon through the volcanic uplands of southern Laguna, and the falls pour off the plateau at its head in three drops, one of them hidden from the basin. Height figures vary wildly between sources, from about 91 metres to 120 metres for the longest drop, and no survey figure was found. What is not in doubt is the setting: vertical walls hung with ferns and vines, smaller side-falls spilling in from above, and a plunge pool loud enough that you shout to be heard.
There are two ways in. The classic route is the 'shooting the rapids' trip from Pagsanjan town: two boatmen paddle, push and physically drag a narrow wooden banca about 5 km upstream through the gorge, hauling it over boulders at each of the 14 rapids, then let the current carry you back down. The newer route starts at a nature park in Cavinti, the municipality the falls actually sit in, where a trail of steel stairs and ladders drops into the gorge. Both finish at the same basin, where a bamboo raft pulls you under the falling water and into the Devil's Cave behind it.
Go for the approach as much as the falls. Few waterfalls near a capital city still involve being carried up a river by hand, and the gorge is the same stretch Francis Ford Coppola used for Apocalypse Now. It is an easy day trip from Manila, and the lakes and resorts of the Laguna uplands, including Lake Caliraya, make a good overnight add-on. The one thing that has long spoiled the trip is money: roadside touts and tip-hungry boatmen. Book through the tourism office or a reputable operator, agree everything in advance, and the day runs smoothly.

Shooting the rapids
The classic, 14 rapidsPagsanjan town, Laguna
You sit on the floor of a low wooden banca, one boatman at the bow and one at the stern, and they paddle, pole and wade the canoe about 5 km up the gorge, lifting it over the rocks at every rapid while you hold on. The cliffs close in, side-falls drip from above and the river turns jade in the dry season. The ride back down is quicker and wetter. It is physically hard work for the boatmen, which is why the tip question matters.

The Cavinti trail

From the nature park at the top of the gorge, a short walk leads to a steep descent on steel stairways and near-vertical ladders, with harness-assisted sections that some visitors describe as rappelling. It takes roughly 30–45 minutes down and longer back up. You arrive at the basin from above, see the falls from high on the gorge wall first, and join the same raft to the cave. It is far cheaper than the boat, but you skip the river.

The basin and the Devil's Cave

Both routes end in the same plunge pool. Here you switch to a balsa, a bamboo raft that crew pull along a rope strung across the basin, straight through the falling water and into the Devil's Cave, a hollow in the rock behind the curtain. Expect to be pounded by cold water for a few seconds. When the river is low and calm you can swim in the pool; when it is high, crew may refuse to take the raft in at all.

The short answer
Take the boat from Pagsanjan if it is your first visit: the river trip is the reason this waterfall is famous, and the falls alone are only half the day. Choose the Cavinti stairs if you are fit, on a budget, or unwilling to deal with tipping pressure, and accept that you miss the gorge.
When to go
December to May is the dry season and the reliable window for the boat trip; March to May is calmest but thinner, and June to November brings high water and typhoon closures.
River level decides everything. In the dry season the rapids are shallow enough for boatmen to haul canoes upstream; after heavy rain the river runs too high and trips stop, sometimes for days.
Cool dry season
December – FebruaryThe most comfortable months: lower humidity, clearer green water and reliable boat trips. The falls are still full after the rains, so the raft ride into the cave is a proper soaking. December can carry the tail of the wet season, and one December 2024 visitor found the water too high to reach the lagoon. Weekends and Christmas holidays bring Manila crowds.

Hot dry season
March – MayHot and sunny, with the lowest, calmest river of the year, which makes it the safest time for the boat and for swimming in the basin. The trade-off is flow: by April and May the falls are thinner. Holy Week and the Philippine school holidays in April and May are the busiest days of the year, so go midweek and early.

Wet and typhoon season
June – NovemberThe falls are at their loudest and the gorge at its greenest, but the river turns brown and fast. Boat trips run on dry spells and stop when the water rises; typhoons in the later months can close everything at short notice. The Cavinti stairs get slick. If you only have this window, keep your date flexible and check with the tourism office the day before.

Ask about the river before you leave Manila
The boatmen, not the calendar, decide whether the trip runs. After a night of heavy rain in the hills the river can be too high to pole upstream, even in the dry season. Operators and resorts in Pagsanjan know by early morning, so call ahead, aim to start by 8am, and have Lake Caliraya or Villa Escudero as a fallback.

The trip Pagsanjan is known for. Two boatmen take up to three passengers in a narrow wooden canoe about 5 km up the gorge, paddling where it is deep and wading, pushing and lifting the boat over the rocks at each of 14 rapids. You sit low with a life vest and helmet and get wet. The upstream leg takes about an hour, the ride back down about 45 minutes. Bring a dry bag and decide on your tip before you set off.

Bamboo raft into the Devil's Cave

At the basin you transfer to a balsa, a raft of lashed bamboo, and crew haul it along a rope straight through the falling water into the Devil's Cave, a hollow in the cliff behind the curtain. It is loud, cold and over in minutes, and it is the moment most people remember. Leave the phone in a dry bag or with someone on the rocks; there is no way to keep it dry under the fall.

The land route into the gorge. From the nature park in Barangay Tibatib, a short trail leads to a long descent on steel stairways and ladders fixed to the gorge wall, with harnessed sections, to the basin at the foot of the falls. It gives you a view down onto the falls that the boat never does, and it is the cheapest way in. The climb back out is the hard part. Wear shoes with grip.

The easiest way to do it: hotel pickup in Manila, a two- to three-hour drive, the boat trip with fees and raft included, and lunch in Pagsanjan. The main value is that the booking and payment happen before you arrive, which removes most of the haggling at the river. Check whether boatmen's tips are included (they usually are not) and whether the tour uses the boat or the Cavinti stairs.

A long day that pairs the falls with the view over Taal Volcano's lake from the Tagaytay ridge, south of Manila. It is a lot of driving, and in Manila traffic 12 hours can stretch further, but it is a practical way to see both if you only have one free day. Lake Caliraya watersports

Up on the plateau above the gorge, Lake Caliraya is a reservoir dammed in 1939 for hydroelectric power and now Laguna's watersports lake, known for bass fishing, wakeboarding, kayaking and jet skis. Caliraya Resort Club in Lumban runs kayaks, jet skis, ziplines, a wave pool and other activities. It is the natural overnight stop after the falls and a cooler escape from the lowlands.

A working coconut plantation in Tiaong, Quezon, about 45 minutes from Pagsanjan, where the famous set piece is lunch at bamboo tables in the ankle-deep outflow of the Labasin falls, a small spillway fall on the Bulakin River. Add carabao-cart rides, a museum and a cultural show. It is contrived rather than wild, but it is a pleasant pairing with the gorge.

Pagsanjan with the Rizal Shrine

Combines the boat trip with a stop at the Rizal Shrine in Calamba, the rebuilt family home of José Rizal, the national hero, on the route between Manila and Pagsanjan, so it adds little driving time. A good choice if you want some Philippine history in the day, although it is easy to add the shrine to a private-car trip yourself for less.

Kawasan Falls canyoneering (Cebu)

If what you want is jumping, sliding and swimming down a canyon rather than being paddled up one, this is the Philippine alternative, a domestic flight away in Badian, southern Cebu. The route wades, swims and jumps down a turquoise gorge to Kawasan's roughly 40-metre main fall. Permits for unlicensed operators were revoked in 2023, and the province set aside ₱110 million for rehabilitation in June 2026, so check what is open.

Pay once, tip once, ignore the touts
Pagsanjan's boat trip has a long reputation for hustles, and it has not fully gone away. Men on the roads into town flag down cars and offer 'cheaper' boats; skip them and go to the municipal tourism office or a riverside resort's desk, where rates are posted. A 2023 visitor who was overcharged ₱100 per person reported it to the tourism office. Tipping the boatmen is customary and fair, since they reportedly earn little beyond tips, but the demands can be aggressive: 2025 reviewers describe being pressed mid-trip and boatmen asking for ₱2,000 each, while one 2023 writer's boatmen suggested ₱500 each. Decide your amount beforehand, carry it in small notes, and pay at the end.

Most people do Pagsanjan as a day trip from Manila; if you stay, the choice is a simple riverside resort in Pagsanjan for an early start, or a lake resort on Caliraya for a quieter night.
Casa del Rio Resort
A seven-room riverside resort with a pool and breakfast included. Guests note that as the last resort on the river it is the first to be dropped off and picked up by the boats, which it arranges. Reviews are warm but the most recent found dates from September 2024.
Pagsanjan Falls Lodge
The long-established lodge on the river, better known as a launch point for boat rides and lunch than as a hotel. Visitors in 2023 reported about ₱1,600 per person for the boat trip here. Reviews are mixed, averaging 3.1 of 5.
Casa Marina Bed and Breakfast
A small bed and breakfast in Pagsanjan with breakfast included, rated 4.5 of 5 on a small number of reviews that praise the staff and the cooking.
Villa Socorro Farm
A farm stay with breakfast included and a nature focus, rated 4.5 of 5 on around 30 reviews for its hospitality and home-cooked meals. A quieter alternative to the riverside strip.

Manila to Pagsanjan by bus
Take a bus bound for Santa Cruz, Laguna. DLTB and LLI run from Buendia and PITX, other lines from Cubao, and HM Transport from Alabang; a January 2026 listing gives fares of about ₱212 (~$3.40) from Buendia, Cubao or PITX and ₱150–157 from Alabang, with departures from early morning. The ride takes around two to three hours. From Santa Cruz, a jeepney runs the short hop to Pagsanjan town (local fares from about ₱16), where you walk or take a tricycle to the tourism office or your resort. For the Cavinti route, take a jeepney from Santa Cruz to Cavinti and a tricycle to Pueblo El Salvador Nature Park in Barangay Tibatib. Leave Manila before 6am to beat traffic.

Practical notes
- Booking and touts Book the boat at the Pagsanjan tourism office, a riverside resort, or in advance with a tour operator. Ignore men who flag down cars on the approach roads or offer to guide you to a 'cheaper' landing. Get the total price per person, including the landing and entrance fees, before you board, and ask whether the raft ride to the cave is included.
- Tipping Tipping the two boatmen is expected, and they do hard physical work. Recent reported requests range from ₱500 to ₱2,000 per boatman, and raft crews also ask. Choose your amount beforehand, carry small notes in a dry bag, and hand it over at the end of the trip, not mid-river.
- Money Bring enough pesos in cash from Manila or Santa Cruz: the boat fee, tips, tricycles and food stalls are cash in practice. At about ₱62.7 to the US dollar in late September 2026, the boat trip costs roughly US$22–28 per person before tips.
- What to wear and pack You will be soaked, especially under the falls. Wear quick-dry clothes over swimwear and water shoes or sandals with straps. A dry bag is essential for phones and cash. Bring sunscreen, drinking water and a change of clothes. On the Cavinti route, trainers or hiking sandals with good grip matter more than anything else.
- Safety Life vests and helmets are provided on the boat. Trips stop when the river is high, and you should not push for a ride the boatmen have refused. Swim in the basin only when crew say it is calm. The Cavinti stairs and ladders are steep and slippery when wet; one operator limits the trek to ages 12 to 59.
- Timing Operations are reported to run from about 8am to 3pm. Start early: the river is calmer, the light in the gorge is better, and you avoid the tour groups that arrive late morning from Manila. Avoid weekends, Holy Week and the April–May school holidays if you can.
- Accessibility Neither route is accessible. The boat means climbing down into a low canoe, sitting on its floor for up to an hour, and staying still while it is lifted over rocks. The Cavinti route involves long steel staircases and ladders. Lake Caliraya and Villa Escudero are far easier alternatives for anyone with limited mobility.

Is Pagsanjan Falls the same as Cavinti Falls?
Yes. The falls lie inside the municipality of Cavinti, about 3 km from its boundary with Pagsanjan, and a 2009 Cavinti ordinance proposed renaming them Cavinti Falls. The local name is Magdapio Falls. They are still widely known as Pagsanjan Falls because the traditional boat trip starts in Pagsanjan town.
How much is the Pagsanjan Falls boat ride?
The posted rate in 2023 was ₱1,250 per person plus a ₱100 landing and entrance fee, about $22. Visitors in 2024 and 2025 reported paying ₱1,450–1,725 per person, depending on where they booked. A canoe takes up to three passengers with two boatmen. Tips for the boatmen and raft crew are extra.
How much should I tip the boatmen?

Was Apocalypse Now filmed at Pagsanjan Falls?
Yes, on the river. After a typhoon destroyed the first sets at Iba, Zambales, Coppola moved production to the Pagsanjan River, where Kurtz's compound and the Do Lung bridge were built. Ifugao people from the northern Cordillera were hired as extras for Kurtz's kingdom. Nothing of the sets remains, but the boat trip passes the same stretch.
When is the best time to visit Pagsanjan Falls?
December to May, the dry season. March to May gives the calmest river and safest swimming, though the falls are thinner; December to February is cooler with fuller falls. From June to November the river often runs too high for the boats, and typhoons can close trips at short notice.
