Waterfalls in New Zealand
56 waterfalls, from Sutherland Falls to Waitupu Stream Falls — at their best September to December.
New Zealand's tallest waterfalls sit in Fiordland, where glacially carved valleys drop almost straight to the sea. Sutherland Falls, reached only via the multi-day Milford Track, is the country's tallest, while Stirling and Bowen Falls are the only two permanent waterfalls tumbling directly into Milford Sound and are usually seen from a cruise on the water. The North Island's falls cluster in Waikato, cut through the softer volcanic rock of the central plateau: Huka Falls is really a narrow, high-volume rapid on the Waikato River rather than a single drop, while Wairere Falls, the North Island's tallest, and Bridal Veil and Marokopa Falls are all short walks off rural roads.
When to go
Fiordland gets some of the country's heaviest rainfall year-round, so Sutherland, Stirling, and Bowen Falls run reliably strong in any season, though winter snow on the road can disrupt Milford Sound access. Waikato's falls are steadiest with autumn and spring rain, April-May and September-October, and remain accessible through winter.
Getting around
Milford Sound's falls are seen from a cruise or kayak on the sound, with Sutherland Falls itself reached only by hiking the Milford Track or taking a scenic flight. Waikato's falls are all self-drive, short walks from car parks off state highway routes.
Entry requirements
US, Canadian, UK and EU visitors all need an NZeTA (NZ$17 via the official app or NZ$23 online) plus the NZ$100 International Visitor Levy, paid together online before travel; Australian citizens need neither. Fees per Immigration New Zealand, May 2026.
Entry rules checked September 2026. They change without much notice — confirm with the official government source before you travel.
