A fan waterfall is a horsetail that spreads out sideways as it drops, so the base is much wider than the top. They form where water leaves a narrow notch and runs down a broad, sloping face. In the right light they look like lace.
How to recognise one
Look for a narrow lip and a much wider foot.
For the geology behind the shapes, read how waterfalls form.
