On the road with Walk Africa Expeditions

The Zambezi above the falls is a different river from the one in the gorge: broad, island-studded, slow in the channels and full of tiger fish and bream. Most visitors only see it from a sunset cruise. A day on it with someone who fishes it all year is the most local thing you can do here, and Ross, who runs a small family expedition outfit out of Victoria Falls, is who we would ask.

Who Ross is

Ross Coventry runs Walk Africa Expeditions, a small family-run operation based in Victoria Falls that puts together tailor-made expeditions around southern Africa for individuals and small groups, from day trips on the river to multi-week overland journeys.

One of its regular fixtures is the Victoria Falls to Msuna walk, known locally as Judy's Walk, a multi-day hike along the Zambezi from the falls to Msuna on the edge of Lake Kariba, run in support of the Victoria Falls Children's Trust. The same crew know the upper river channel by channel, which is what makes the fishing days worth booking.

We are still building this profile with Ross: prices, boats and the fishing calendar below are our best current understanding, and we will replace them with his own as soon as we have them.

What a day looks like

A fishing day means an early boat from above the falls, working the channels and the drop-offs around the islands for tiger fish, with a break on a sandbank and the hippo and elephant along the bank as the scenery. Tackle can be supplied; bring your own fly rod if that is your thing. Half days run in the morning or the last three hours of light.

What Ross offers

Tiger fishing on the upper Zambezi

Half-day and full-day boat sessions above the falls. Tiger fishing peaks in the hot, low-water months from September to December.

Bream and conventional days

A gentler option through the cooler months, good for families and first-timers.

Tailor-made expeditions

Small-group and private trips around Zimbabwe and its neighbours, built around what you want to see.

The Victoria Falls to Msuna walk

A multi-day Zambezi walk run for charity each season; ask about the next date.

Practical notes

Season
Tiger fish: September to December. Bream: the cooler months, May to August. The river is highest in March to May.
Bring
Hat, sun protection, polarised sunglasses, a long-sleeved shirt and your own fly tackle if you fish fly.
Licence
A Zimbabwe fishing licence is required; it is usually arranged with the boat. Ask when you book.
Booking
Email or WhatsApp with your dates and whether you are after tiger, bream or fly.

How to book

There is no booking platform for this, which is rather the point. Email Ross directly with your dates, how many of you there are and what you want from the day, or call or WhatsApp +263 77 701 0233. Mention Book the Falls if you like; it changes nothing about the price and we earn nothing from it.

Quick answers

Do I need my own tackle?

No. Rods and tackle can be supplied; bring your own if you fish fly or have a favourite setup.

Is it good for children?

Bream days are. Tiger fishing is more of a fight and better for older kids and adults.

Which months are best?

September to December for tiger fish, when the river is low and warm; the cooler months for bream.
